The Legendary Ghost Board of 'Scott Pilgrim's' Lucas Lee [Video]

It's not like there was any doubt before, but it can't hurt to say again that the best/craziest Scott Pilgrim fans are those from Toronto, the setting of Bryan Lee O'Malley's canonized indie comics opus. Locations familiar to many Torontonians appear throughout the six-volume Oni Press graphic novel series, perhaps none more memorable than the terrifyingly long stairwell where Evil Ex-Boyfriend Lucas Lee meets his skaterly demise. In the best memorial for a comic book character since someone left a set of kicky go-go boots on the George Washington Bridge, a clever fan has left behind what's become known as the Ghost Board of Lucas Lee.

As part of a featurette created for Last Call with Carson Daly, Scott Pilgrim creator Bryan Lee O'Malley and Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World director Edgar Wright visit the Ghost Board, as well as a number of other Toronto locations integral to the slacker saga. You can see it after the jump.

Marv Wolfman Dishes on the Many Missions of DC Universe Online [Video]

Nov 10th 2010 By: Alan Kistler

There was a lot of awesomeness to take in during last week's DC Universe Online press event at Sony's offices in Austin, Tx., but one of the highlights of the trip was sitting down with signature story writer Marv Wolfman. The prolific Teen Titans and Crisis on Infinite Earths scribe has contributed hundreds of missions to the upcoming MMORPG, which will pit players against everyone from the Scarecrow in the sewers of Gotham, to Doomsday in Smallville, to Trigon in DC's underworld. ComicsAlliance Editor-In-Chief Laura Hudson and contributing correspondent Alan Kistler caught up with Wolfman to learn more about his experience making one of the most anticipated games of 2011 accessible to both current comic book fans and new players.

When asked about the difference between his comic book and videogame work, Wolfman compared his storytelling goals to that of a travel guide steering road trippers across the country, suggesting all of the best monuments and sites with the knowledge that the choice is ultimately up to those behind the wheel.

Wolfman also broke down the importance of making the game and its characters accessible to non comic readers, emphasizing the importance of making each hero and villain's motivations clear through their actions in each story.

"I had the same exact problem when I did a book called Crisis on Infinite Earths. That was aimed, very much, towards Marvel readers at the time, to try and show them how many great characters DC had. And you have to walk a very fine line where you are not disappointing any regular DC fans, but you're trying to make the characters clear enough for others."

Disclosure: Sony Online Entertainment provided for airfare, hotel, and meal costs for this visit.

Is Stan Lee Hoarding All the Silver Age Artwork? [Video]

"Storage units full of artwork. He has no idea what he has. He's never looked at it."

An offhand remark in a very remarkable Stan Lee video suggests that the Marvel Comics architect may be unknowingly in possession of a significant collection of lost Silver Age artwork, perhaps the largest collection in existence!

The video was shot as a segment for Hollywood Treasures, a new SyFy series that spotlights lost relics from the entertainment industry. In the 12-minute clip, host Joe Maddalena presents Lee with a complete original artwork for Fantastic Four #12, the first Marvel Comics crossover, in which the FF encounter the Hulk. The footage is essential viewing, depicting a genuinely awe-struck Lee inspecting the stunning Jack Kirby pages for the first time in nearly 50 years. It's a rare pleasure to see the writer expressing such sincere enthusiasm for his and Kirby's work, as Lee's persona has been chiefly characterized by a winking hucksterism and unrelentingly self-deprecating sense of humor.

After Lee has left the scene, Maddalena reveals around 1:05 from the end of the video that according to one of Lee's associates, Lee is sitting on "boxes and boxes" of original artwork.

I said, "Does he have any artwork?" [Stan Lee's associate] goes, "Boxes and boxes in the garage." I said, "What do you mean, garage?" He goes, "Storage units full." I said, "Well, supposedly I've heard him say he doesn't have anything." The guy said, "Storage units full of artwork." He goes, "He has no idea what he has. He's never looked at it."
The rareness of early Marvel Comics artwork has been a subject of much sorrow for pop culture historians and art collectors. Is it possible that Stan Lee is in possession of much of American comics' auspicious history -- several Holy Grails worth of original artwork -- without even knowing it?

Marvel Melds Video Games and Cosplay with the 3D Masks of 'Grandmaster's Challenge'

The torrent of new Marvel multimedia projects continues with Marvel Superheroes 3D: Grandmaster's Challenge, a new video game coming exclusively to the Nintendo Wii platform. Developed by Bigben Interactive and on sale later this month, the game puts players in the roles of Spider-Man, Captain America, Thor, Iron Man and Wolverine, who naturally battle an array of familiar threats from the Marvel Universe in a first-person style. Where Grandmaster's Challenge distinguishes itself is its inclusion of 3D superhero masks for players, perhaps making this the first official cosplayer console game? ww
Reminiscent of the classic Star Trek episode, "The Gamemasters of Triskellion," the story of "Marvel Superheroes 3D: Grandmaster's Challenge" finds the villain Grandmaster testing the heroes skills in a deadly game for his own amusement.
The heroes are forced to play along and complete a variety of challenges designed to test their abilities to their limits as the Grandmaster manipulates them like pawns on his own private board game. Up to four players can participate to compete against the Grandmaster and his band of villain henchmen, all the while joining forces to break the dome and win their freedom.
Yes, yes, yes, that sounds lovely. But what about the superhero facemasks with 3D glasses built-in?
Marvel Superheroes 3D: Grandmaster's Challenge will be bundled with a selection of five superhero masks – one for each of the lead characters – to lend an added level of immersion for younger superheroes! Each mask is embedded with relief 3D glasses in the optical outlets, allowing players to experience the title in a third dimension. The 3D mode can be switched on and off at will from an in-game menu and can be experienced on any display with no additional technology.
Marvel Superheroes 3D: Grandmaster's Challenge goes on sale November 26 exclusively for Nintendo Wii.

'DC Universe Online' Welcomes You to the Metropolis Police Department [Video]

If you thought Sony Online Entertainment had run out of things to show off about DC Universe Online, think again. The developers released a new video this week highlighting one of the DC Universe's more familiar locations: the Metropolis Police Department, which serves a crucial function in the massively multiplayer role-playing game based on the DC Comics superheroes.

The Metropolis Police Department is one of several "safe houses" to be found in the world of DC Universe Online. Located in the center of the iconic city, the MPD is a hub of important information and commerce necessary to advance through the game. There, you can congregate with other players and DC superheroes, purchase upgrades, and learn information from the interactive "wanted" posters, such as where to find your enemies and how to defeat them. The Metropolis Police Department also serves as a gateway to other locations within the game.

Think of it like those caves in The Legend of Zelda games, only a really big cave with everything you need in one place that's a whole lot easier to find and not populated only by cranky old hermits and cryptic old crones. Unless you count Dan Turpin and Maggie Sawyer -- which you'd better not.
