Every NBA Team Makes Theirs Marvel in 'ESPN Magazine' [Gallery]
The NBA has faced a number of shakeups this season as Lebron James left the Cleveland Cavaliers to join Dwayne Wade and Chris Bosh on the Miami Heat. The New Jersey Nets left the Izod Center, where they had played since 1981, and were purchased by Mikhail Prokhorov, the second richest man in Russia. The number one overall draft pick, John Wall, will also make his debut with the Washington Wizards when they travel to the new Amway Center in Orlando, Florida, to take on the Orlando Magic.
Now you might be wondering why we mention all this for those of you not into basketball. The reason? These events and other highlights are depicted in the November edition of ESPN The Magazine by Marvel artists including Olivier Coipel, Leinil Francis Yu, J. Scott Campbell, Terry Dodson, Kaare Andrews, John Romita Sr., and Marvel Editor-In-Chief, Joe Quesada. Quesada did the honors on the cover of this issue for ESPN. Perhaps not so coincidently, elements of Iron Man, Thor, and Captain America, all stars of the upcoming Avengers film as well as their own, appear on the cover.
"I was immediately excited and to me the mathematics of NBA superstars and Marvel super heroes just goes without saying," Vice President and Executive Editor Alex Alonso told Marvel.com. "This was a collaborative effort from the ground up. The editors [at ESPN The Magazine], myself and [Marvel Manager Talent Relations] George Beliard, who was assisting me, were in constant communication at every stage in the game down to the minutiae of the shoelaces."
ESPN The Magazine Editor-In-Chief Gary Belsky also spoke with Marvel.com:
"They didn't presume to be experts on the NBA, so we figured out pretty quickly that what we needed to do was give them storylines for each team and they'd match up the appropriate stars or owners with the right Marvel characters or storylines," continues Belsky. "That's where they were expert, and I've got to tell you they did an amazing job in terms of figuring out the best connections between the NBA storylines as defined by ESPN The Magazine and the pantheon of Marvel characters."
Although no NBA players have officially commented on the covers as of press time, fans in Cleveland are not so pleased about the Cavaliers' Marvel cover, which depicts James' controversial departure from the team some months back via a parody of The Amazing Spider-Man #50's "Spider-Man No More" cover and labels the Cavs "Un-amazing"
"Cavs season ticket-holder Brian Barney, a downtown ad executive who saw the images online, was upset at what he considered a cheap shot. Barney told Cleveland.com, "It's belittling," he said. "It seems mean-spirited."

'Super Street Fighter IV' Characters Get Hyper Real [Gallery]
Super Street Fighter IV characters Hakan, Makoto, Guy, Dudley, and Dee Jay were all graced with new looks this week as part of Capcom's new DLC for the title, but unofficially, Australian artist and SF superfan Kode Abdo's hyper realistic take on the series' biggest stars may prove equally exciting for longtime players.
ComicsAlliance reached out to Kode to learn more about his creative process and why Street Fighter lore proved so inspiring for him.
"[I've] been designing for around six years now and I'm still trying to learn new tricks. Also, I am a huge fan of illustration mostly in the form of heroes and villains a.k.a. comics. I am also a gamer - [my] game of choice is Super Street Fighter IV, well until Marvel Vs. Capcom 3 comes out. Right now i design most things on Shadowloo.com, which is a Street Fighter news and event website, and I also have some side projects I am working on -- nothing crazy like Marvel or DC :D, but I would sure love to work on something for them one day."
Kode went on to describe the inspiration for his Super Street Fighter IV images, along with the response he's received from fans of the game.
"I wanted to show all the fans a different side to the characters they have grown up with, just like i have," wrote Kode, "See, I have been a fan of Street Fighter since the first game came out, well second game to be exact :D. I fell in love with Street Fighter ever since that day, so one time i was in Photoshop and I saw one of the model photos I had looked just like the one-eyed warrior Sagat, so i went ahead and manipulated it to look like him and the payoff was great from all the [Street Fighter] fans. They loved them so much so i decided to do [all the characters] - well most of them, anyway. "
Kode Abdo is a fan of UDON, which has been publishing both original and translated SF comics for nearly a decade and will release the two-volume manga Street Fighter Gaiden next month.
"It's always enjoyable to read your favorite thing in the world as its story is played out. Plus i am a major fan of the art styles of the UDON crew - some highly talented members in that group."
