Martin Sheen to Play Uncle Ben in New Spider-Man Movie
"With great power comes great responsibility... unless you're the President and you've concealed your debilitating neural disease so as to get elected, because that's chill."
These are the words we hope will be spoken by Martin Sheen in Sony's upcoming reboot of the Spider-Man film franchise. The lauded The West Wing and Wall Street actor has been cast in the important role of Uncle Ben, the mentor whose unimpeachable morals will inform Peter Parker's life as the heroic Spider-Man of New York City, but only after Peter -- in breathtakingly Charlie Sheen fashion -- ignores Ben completely for purely selfish reasons, resulting in the old man's senseless death. (Spoiler!)
Additionally, Deadline reports that Sally Field may join the film in the role of Ben's widow and Spider-Man mother figure, Aunt May. An Academy Award-winner for her performance in 1979's Norma Rae, Field is best known to modern audiences for ubiquitous osteoporosis treatment commercials in which she repeatedly says the words "bone loss."
Directed by Marc Webb and staring Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker/Spider-Man and Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy, the untitled Spidey film is a relaunch of the Marvel Comics franchise following the enormous success of three previous movies directed by Sam Raimi and starring Toby McGuire. The new film will begin shooting in December.
